Gadgetwise Blog: Q&A: Getting a Webcam to Work With Skype
I can’t get Skype for Windows 7 to work with my Webcam for video calls. The camera is built into the computer’s lid, so where do I start troubleshooting?
Check to make sure Skype and the Webcam are communicating with each other. Log into Skype, go to the Tools menu and click on Video Settings in the Skype Options box. If the program recognizes the camera, you should see it listed as “integrated camera” (or similar wording) at the top of the screen and see a video image of yourself in the middle of the window.
For people who have both an integrated Webcam and an external one connected through the computer’s USB port, Skype should display a drop-down menu at the top of the Video Settings screen that lets you select which camera you want to use. If you don’t see a camera listed, Skype isn’t communicating with it properly and there are more troubleshooting steps to take.
First, make sure other programs aren’t using the camera. Instant messaging applications or Web sites that offer video chat and video-editing programs may have called dibs on the Webcam first, so quit everything on the computer except Skype and then check to see if the program recognizes the camera.
If that doesn’t work, check the software you’re using. If you haven’t already done so, install the most recent version of Skype and Microsoft’s DirectX. (Running Windows Update from the All Programs menu under the Start button may also get you the latest version of DirectX, as well as any updates for Windows itself.)
Still no luck when you check for the Webcam in Skype? You may need to update or reinstall the Webcam’s drivers.
Go to the Start menu to Control Panel and select Hardware and Sound. In the Devices and Printers area, open Device Manager. Look down the list of hardware connected to the computer and click the triangle next to Imaging Devices. Right-click on the Integrated Camera entry and choose Update Driver Software. (Owners of external Webcams can usually find, download and install the latest drovers from the Support area of the manufacturer’s Web site.
Skype has a few other suggestions on its Web site if the Webcam still refuses to play nice.
